Housing Matters Episode 10: George McCleary of McCleary Realty and Development

In the latest episode of Housing Matters I spoke with George McCleary. A property developer mostly centered in Portland Oregon. George became a social media sensation after making a satire video showing just how easy it can be to squat long term in a vacant rental unit. We discuss his video, but also housing development and rent control in Oregon as well as eviction backlogs and a variety of other topics.

We of course covered housing policy, but additionally we had a great discussion about veterans and military families in her district and the fentanyl crisis in every part of our state.

In this week’s episode you will hear from Jason Roth (Van Guy) and Jaskaran Singh both local rental housing providers as well as Kaitlyn Jackson, a local landlord-tenant law attorney. All three speak about the current state of affairs when it comes to eviction cases in King County and how, what should be a simple eviction for non-payment of rent, is taking upwards of a year. We discuss how the King County Court system and the Housing Justice Project seem to be creating a complete log jam of eviction cases. Whether that is by design or accidental, you decide.
